University of Bucharest – Historic Building

The historic University of Bucharest building is an architectural landmark in the city centre. Its main wing was built between 1857 and 1869 to designs by Alexandru Orăscu. The neoclassical ensemble reflects the development of Romanian education and urban culture. Programme E7 introduces the university during the panoramic tour of the capital.

More about this place

Side wings were added between 1912 and 1926 to Nicolae Ghica-Budești’s designs. Air raids in 1944 destroyed the central section and Alexandru Storck’s relief; the central building was subsequently reconstructed.
