German Fountain — Istanbul

The German Fountain stands at the northern end of the former Hippodrome in Sultanahmet Square. It commemorates German Emperor Wilhelm II’s visit to Istanbul. Its octagonal pavilion has marble columns and a dome decorated with golden mosaics on the inside.

The fountain was made in sections in Germany and assembled after shipment to Istanbul. As an imperial gift, it adds a diplomatic layer to a square already shaped by Byzantine and Ottoman history.
