Hagia Sophia is one of Istanbul’s most recognisable architectural landmarks. Its monumental dome and surviving artistic features bring together Byzantine and Ottoman heritage. Located on the historic peninsula, it is an active mosque with separate arrangements for tourist visits.
Golden mosaics and frescoes survived for centuries beneath plaster after the building’s Ottoman transformation. Their later uncovering adds a visible artistic layer to an interior shaped by domes, vaults and monumental calligraphy.
