Sultanahmet Square occupies the site of Constantinople’s Hippodrome, once a venue for chariot races and public events. The Egyptian Obelisk, Serpent Column and German Fountain mark its historic landscape. It offers a convenient starting point for a walk through Istanbul’s old city.
The German Fountain’s structural components were made in Germany, shipped and assembled in Istanbul. Eight columns support its dome, while the commemorative design represents friendship between the German and Ottoman states.
