Pirin is known for rocky peaks, glacial lakes and old coniferous forests. Its national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its natural value. Silicate and limestone terrains create different plant habitats, while lakes add moist ecological niches. Local endemics include the Pirin poppy and Pirin thyme, which grow nowhere else beyond this mountain.
