Tsarevets is Veliko Tarnovo’s fortified hill, associated with the rulers and patriarchs of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Remains of palaces, churches and homes lie within its walls, crowned by the reconstructed patriarchal church. A walk through the site combines medieval history with sweeping views of the Yantra and old town.

Inside the patriarchal church, Teofan Sokerov's large secular compositions interpret medieval Bulgarian history. Excavated foundations of hundreds of houses also show that the fortified hill was a densely inhabited urban centre.
