Bulgaria
Zlatolist, in Sandanski municipality, is best known for Saint George’s Church. It is associated with Stoyna, called Reverend Stoyna by her followers. The large plane tree and quiet village setting frame a visit focused on local religious tradition and the history of southwestern Bulgaria.
The church was built in 1857 and its murals painted by Teofil Minov in 1876. Images include Saints Cyril and Methodius and an unusual depiction of Saint Christopher with a dog’s head.
