Useful information: Kavala lies in northern Greece, just 350 km southeast of Sofia. The town stretches along the Aegean shore at the foot of low hills, some descending almost to the sea. It attracts visitors with emerald waters, abundant greenery and bearable summer heat.
The old town’s narrow cobbled streets are especially beautiful, with houses in bright pink, yellow and blue. Other buildings rise like dazzling white ships, with spacious terraces where children cycle. Pretty balconies are decorated with flowers, while wooden shutters give the streets an old-world atmosphere.
Kavala has 100,000 residents, but its population triples in summer. Founded in the 8th–7th centuries BC, it was first called Neapolis. Later it was renamed Christoupolis (City of Christ) in honour of the Apostle Paul. Legend says he baptised the first Christian woman, Lada, at Philippi, 17 km northwest of town. Remains of an ancient Roman settlement can still be seen there.
Kavala’s sights include the fortress walls, Byzantine remains and the aqueduct, a bridge from Roman times. Fishing remains the local people’s main livelihood. The lights of fishing boats setting off in the evening are a real attraction for resort visitors.
Thassos is a Greek island in the northern Aegean, near the coast of Eastern Macedonia and Western Thrace at the mouth of the Mesta River. The capital and largest town is Thassos, often called Limenas. Limenaria is the second-largest settlement.
Thassos lies in the northern Aegean, about 7 kilometres from the mainland. It is the northernmost island of the Thracian Gulf, a short distance from Keramoti Bay. From afar it resembles a tall mountain sinking into the sea. Its highest point is Mount Ipsarion at 1203 m. The upper slopes are covered with Mediterranean pine forests; lower down and at the foot grow cypresses, plane trees, firs, horse chestnuts, Valonia oaks and evergreen shrubs. Narrow coastal lowlands are occupied by olive groves, with figs, pomegranates and peaches along the shore. The circuit of the island is about 100 km.
Legend links the island’s name to beautiful Europa, abducted by Zeus, and young Thassos, King Agenor’s grandson, sent with Agenor’s sons to find her. After a long search he reached the emerald island with lush vegetation, a wonderful climate and gold mines. Another tradition identifies Thassos as the island of the sirens who tried to lure Odysseus off course.
Of all the Greek islands, Thassos may be the most authentic. While some neighbours have adopted international features such as karaoke bars and Chinese restaurants, Thassos remains a model of tradition. Its green hills, fertile vineyards and olive groves have earned it the name “emerald island”. Its beaches range from secluded coves to broad sandy stretches. Tripiti and Potos are among its best-preserved corners, while Skala Rachoni is developing faster and already offers water sports.
