Basilica Cistern — Istanbul

The Basilica Cistern is an underground Byzantine reservoir in Istanbul’s historic centre. Rows of marble columns, water and reflections create its distinctive atmosphere. Two Medusa heads at the bases of columns are among its best-known details. A visit reveals the underground heritage of the city.

More about this place

The cistern stored aqueduct and rainwater for the Great Palace and neighbouring buildings. Many columns were probably reused from older structures, showing how Byzantine engineering combined infrastructure with inherited building materials.
