Bulgaria
Shipka lies at the foot of the Balkan Mountains above the Kazanlak Valley. Its landmark is the Nativity Memorial Church, with golden domes and richly decorated façades. The town’s name is also linked to nearby Shipka Pass and the Russo-Turkish War battles. The town’s church and the mountain’s Freedom Monument are separate sites.
The park museum preserves battle positions, batteries and dugouts associated with the pass’s defence in 1877–1878. The Freedom Monument displays weapons, documents, decorations and personal possessions belonging to participants in the fighting.
